Camping Gavin was booked through the Camping and Caravanning Club's Carefree Travel Service and is probably one of the best campsite we've stayed at.

Situated in a valley near the Ordesa National Park, the south facing, terraced campsite is set in beautiful surroundings with fantastic views from most pitches. The shower and toilet blocks are worth a mention as they would put a lot of 4 star hotels to shame. In fact, they were that spotless and modern that I could happily move into them tomorrow!

The site has a lot of facilities including tennis and table tennis, a supermarket, a bar/cafeteria plus a restaurant. We ate at the restaurant every other night as it was so reasonably priced and the food very good. About £10.50 for a 3 course meal including wine, mineral water and bread. The food was local, rustic and lots of it. The boys even tried unusual stuff like cuttle fish and rabbit.

The restaurant, like all others in the area didn't open until 8.30 (when the sun went down) so expect to eat late. The town of Biescas is about a mile downhill while the village of Gavin is about half a mile uphill. Every time we visited Biescas it was shut, so we never ended up eating there.

Whilst the area was stunningly scenic, there wasn't a lot in the way of pretty, historic towns to visit nearby. Torla, at the gateway to Ordesa was an exception. The small hamlet of Yésero on a hill nearby had a small popular restaurant and a large, even more popular dog.

The region has a lot of walks and other activities of which we participated very little - mainly because there wasn't any leaflets in English and it was too darned hot!

We travelled by ferry to Santander and found the roads very easy, although it did take us about 6 hours to get there rather than the 4.5 predicted by the AA and Michelin. This included a couple of breaks and a wrong turning or 3. Me and Mrs Archie still remain on talking terms though! A great site.
